Natural therapies for migraines

There are many levels of headaches and migraines with as many remedies from the generic medicine you can buy over the counter to complementary therapies and medicines such as homeopathic and bach flower remedies. Headaches and migraines can be brought on in many different ways,  such as environment, food, drink or stress.

If you are in severe pain or have long term symptoms do contact your GP.

Reflexology is the gentle massaging of relevant pressure points, on the feet hands and face. These are connected to the reflex points of our organs, to relax the body, alleviate symptoms and de-stress. The top of the big toe and the pads of the other toes can be gently massaged to help relieve headache symptoms. This can be done by a therapist or by self once you find the correct areas to work on.

Aromatherapy, essential oils can be used in a number of different ways to help. Probably the most known  way would be in conjunction with massage and this is best from a qualified Aroma- therapist who can blend a mixture of essential oils specifically for each client. The oils can be use

  1. Topically in a carrier oil or cream, not undiluted,
  2. In the bath
  3. Inhalation on a tissue
  4. A room diffuser

Their magic works wonders to reduce inflammation, muscle spasm, swelling and pain. Some also have a calming effect on your mind, and improve blood circulation to your brain There are many of books and much information on correct use of oils, it is best to think ‘less is more’, do not over use and purchase from a reputable store.

Helpful oils for headaches and migraines would be:

  • Lavender
  • Chamomile
  • Peppermint
  • Rosemary

My favourite book is The Fragrant Pharmacy by Valerie Ann Worwood.

As many headaches can be brought on by stress, healing can be a great natural remedy. Healing is a technique based on the principle that the therapist can channel energy into the patient by means of touch or holding the hands just above the body, to activate the natural healing processes of the clients to restore physical and emotional well-being and to truly relax and let go.  A therapist will either place their hands lightly on the body, reiki or just above the body, spiritual healing. Healing is not generally a religious technique but some churches do offer sessions.

Therapists for all treatments can be found at their relevant associations check on line.
