History of hair removal

As far back as the ancient Egyptians, women have preferred the look of a smooth hairless body, a sign of youth, beauty and innocence. The wife of a divine pharaoh set the example by removing all her body hair by the use of a sticky emulsion made from honey and oil.

The ancient Greeks carried on this tradition as you can see from the sculptures of women they all had hair free bodies unlike the male statues which do have pubic hair.

The Roman girls removed any hair as soon as it started growing using either tweezers, depilatory creams, philotrum or dropax or waxing using resin or pitch.

Depilating fell out of fashion when the Queen of France, Catherine de Medici, forbade her ladies in waiting from removing pubic hair.

In the sixties it started to come back into fashion and now many women prefer the smooth look and feel of a hairless body. Hair removal from the legs ,bikini line, eyebrows and under arms has always been popular and just as popular now is the intimate area waxing. The Brazilian women who wear thongs for sunbathing needed a bit hair more removed and the removal of all or most pubic hair gets its name from there.

In the last few years men have started to experiment with hair removal particularly in the intimate areas and this has become extremely popular and accepted.

Different types of hair removal

  1. Shaving lasts 2-3 days
  2. Depilatory creams lasts 2-4 weeks
  3. Tweezing lasts 2-4 weeks
  4. Threading lasts 2-6 weeks
  5. Sugaring lasts 4-6 weeks
  6. Waxing lasts 3-6 weeks
  7. Laser treatments This can be a permanent solution

Obviously some of the above hair removal methods can be done at home but some are better suited to a salon visit. Expensive is not always the best so here are a few things to check out when choosing where to go-

  • Cleanliness
  • Hygiene
  • Privacy
  • Insurance
  • Qualifications of staff
  • Type of products used
  • Price list
  • Pre-treatment consultation
  • After care advice

A good reputable salon will always allow you to look around first when you go to book your appointment, if not, beware!!!!!!!
