What is Gua Sha?

Gua Sha originates from an ancient Chinese, massage style therapy, that can be traced back to the Palaeolithic Age, old stone age, where small stones were used in a pressured stroke to help with illness and pain.

The Gua Sha tool is often made from jade or rose quarts, however other materials can be used such as wood or metal, the correct way of using it is more important than what it is made of although some people believe the frequency of the stone is also important. The different shaped sides allows the Gua Sha to be used on different parts of the body and face with ease.

In Chinese medicine the energy in our body is called Qi or Chi, pronounced “Chee.” The Chi flows through the body similarly to the venous system. These pathways are called meridian lines and connect to the acupuncture points that also connect to the main internal organs. When our chi is not flowing freely we can feel this through illness and pain, the Gua Sha massage helps to increase circulation and the flow of Chi.

Gua Sha massage treatments are given straight on to an oiled skin with short or medium one way strokes depending on area it is used on. Applied pressure causes petechiae, minor bruising and small red marks, this stimulates circulation locally releasing toxins from the body.

Treatments can be given on the body and or the face. A 30 minute body treatment can help reduce pain almost immediately and leave the client feeling invigorated or sometimes quite tired. A facial treatment leaves the skin looking and feeling fresh and over time with daily sessions can reduce fine lines and wrinkles.
