Essential oils for the winter

Why not try a natural approach to treating the usual ailments of winter with true essential oils?

Essential oils come from different parts of plants, trees and roots and can be used for many ailments and in different ways. They can be applied topically- diluted in a cream or oil, in a diffuser, neat drops added to the bath/foot bath or inhaled from a tissue. Always buy from a reputable retailer and follow instructions on usage and dilutions. Not to be used on babies or children without advice.

The Fragrant Pharmacy, by Valerie Ann Worwood, is a very informative and easy to follow book for therapists and beginners.

Eucalyptus Oil

Used for: antibacterial, antifungal, antimicrobial, antiviral, decongestant anti-inflammatory

Can help*: respiratory problems, colds, coughs, runny nose, sore throat, asthma, nasal congestion, bronchitis and sinusitis.

Ravensara Oil

Used for: analgesic, anti-allergenic, antibacterial, antimicrobial, antidepressant, antifungal, antiseptic, antispasmodic, antiviral, aphrodisiac, disinfectant, diuretic, expectorant, relaxant.

Can help*: tooth ache, headache, joint pains

Sandal Wood Oil

Used for: expectorant, antiviral, antifungal, anti-inflammatory (resulting from fever and viral infections)

Can help*: Coughs, colds, flu, mumps, catarrh


Used for: immune- booster, purifying, energy booster, mood booster

Can help*: sores, fevers, coughs, colds, bronchitis, laryngitis

Lavender Oil

Used for: nervous tension, relieve pain, disinfect skin, enhance blood circulation,  calming, restorative

Can help*: anxiety and emotional stress, headaches, burns, wounds,  sore dry hands, eczema, psoriasis.
