Emotional Freedom Technique

EFT is often known as the ‘tapping therapy’ or ‘acupuncture without the needles’.

Created by Gary Craig in the 1990s, it enables people to release negative emotions that cause fears, phobias, stress, trauma etc that hold them back, physical pain, or disruption in their life.

One of the most interesting and amazing details about EFT is that as the therapist I don’t need to know the actual reason for the problem, and we don’t need to go over a person’s history. This
makes it a lot easier for some clients who find it difficult to talk about their issue and those who just don’t want to rake up the past.

EFT is a self-help technique that, once learnt, can be used on a daily basis, as a preventative treatment, or in an emergency/stressful moment. It is easy to learn and can be used for many issues by young and old alike. I have personally treated young children for bed wetting, sleep problems, nightmares and, most recently, a child who was having difficulty with anger issues. This has now resulted in the child doing better at school and keeping calmer at home.

All children have to be accompanied by, preferably, a parent, or carer and the attending adult has always said the treatment has helped them as well. I have seen clients who needed to let go of old thoughts and behaviours to enable them to repair and move on from bad relationships.

Fears and phobias can affect a person’s whole life and stop them from doing many activities that most of us find normal.

Case study: Bird fear/phobia

Some years ago a client came to me with a fear of birds. They had had it for 50 years and it stopped them from many simple tasks like hanging the washing out, sitting outside a café to have a coffee, and even going shopping.

The client knew the reason – when they were 8 years old, the neighbour’s bird had escaped from its cage, flew into their garden and sat on their head. For a young child, this was obviously very scary and was the start of a life-long fear of birds.

I asked the client to give a score of 0 -10 on the severity, the answer came back 100.

I demonstrated the tapping sequence and we started with the ‘set up statement’: “Even though I am afraid of birds, I deeply and completely love and accept myself”.

We then tapped on the meridian points on the hands face and body to help release this fear. The session lasted 1 hour and at the end, the client said they felt calmer about the thought of birds and felt they could look at one in a book.

We made another appointment for a week later and I suggested they do some work on this at home.

On the second visit they were very upbeat about the whole thing and within 15 mins of the session, they said that the fear had gone. Even for me, this was fast. They spoke about going down to the pond in the park and we went together where we literally walked through a flock of ducks, geese, swans and moorhens. My client was thrilled they had managed to do this and that the fear had gone; they were even fascinated about the ducks’ webbed feet.
