Different styles of massage

There are over 200 different types of massage, from the truly relaxing right through to the deep tissue/sports massage.

Sports massage

Sports massage combines a number of different massage techniques and is usually tailored to your specific needs. The therapist will focus on the muscle group or groups that your sport is using, help to flush out lactic acid that builds up after exertion and help relax the muscles to reduce the likelihood of injury. This massage is often a deep massage and although can be rather uncomfortable at the time will leave you feeling invigorated and focused for your next race, sport or gym session.

Swedish massage

Swedish massage improves your circulation, soothes your muscles and increases relaxation. Different pressures are used over different areas of the body and should not be painful. However, if you have very tight muscles that need some extra work the therapist may need to work a bit deeper.

Swedish massage helps to:

  • Improve circulation
  • Increases oxygen flow to the blood
  • Flushes out toxins that cause muscular strain
  • helps to keep ligaments and tendons supple
  • reduces emotional and physical stress

Aromatherapy Massage

Aromatherapy massage is usually a very gentle relaxing massage therapy with the use of essential oils added to the massage oil to add another dimension to the treatment. The oils can be used for help with muscular aches and pains and also emotional and psychological issues. A qualified aromatherapist will blend the oils specifically for you and your needs.

Hot Stone Massage

Heated, special smooth stones are placed on the body to warm and loosen tight muscles and balance energy centres. This is good for clients with muscle tension and who don’t like the firmer massage.

Deep tissue massage

As it says, deep tissue massage has a firmer intensity and is very good for tight, painful muscles or recovery from injury. Deep tissue massage can be helpful for repetitive strain injuries or postural problems and more specific areas. This massage can be slightly uncomfortable for a couple of days after the treatment.

Shiatsu

Shiatsu massage originated from Japan and uses finger pressure in a rhythmic sequence on acupuncture meridians in the body. Although the pressure is quite firm it is very relaxing and can be given whilst clothed.

Thai Massage

Thai massage also works with the body’s energy system, using gentle pressure on specific points and stretching the body. The treatment can feel rather like a yoga session with the client very relaxed.

When looking for the right therapist it is best to check their qualifications, make sure they are insured or affiliated to a credited association.
